GHOST WRITING

GHOST WRITING — LIMITED-SCOPE LEGAL ASSISTANCE

Professional Legal Drafting for Self-Represented Individuals

Sometimes you want to handle your own case — but you still need your documents to be written correctly and persuasively.
Under Florida Rule 4-1.2(c), an attorney may provide limited-scope representation, often called ghost writing, by drafting or reviewing pleadings and giving legal advice without formally appearing in court.

At Brevard Consumer Law Center, attorney George Gingo offers this service for individuals who want to represent themselves but need professional guidance and document preparation.

How It Works

  1. You send your documents and facts.
For example, in an eviction case you must send the entire complaint and all exhibits as 600 dpi, searchable PDF scans (OCR) — no photographs or screenshots. You must also include a detailed, comprehensive written statement of your facts. Emotions are important when given correct context. However, at this stage, emotions do not help in the analysis of the law and generally get in the way. Please try to be as unemotional as possible when drafting your statement of the facts.

  1. Attorney reviews and quotes a flat fee.
After reviewing your materials, Attorney Gingo will tell you the total cost for the project — for example, drafting an Answer and Affirmative Defenses similar to that in the Benyon case (attached to Mobile Home Park Law page) may cost around $1,600.  However, that document could have been Ghost Written for less than $400 if a comprehensive statement of the facts is provided with a high definition scan of the operative documents.

  1. You sign the agreement and pay.
No work begins until Attorney receives both a signed fee agreement and full payment.
You can pay by check, electronic transfer, or credit card.

  1. Attorney prepares your documents.
You will receive a professionally drafted pleading, motion, or letter — ready to file, serve, or present on your own.

  1. You file, serve, and appear in court.
Because this is limited-scope assistance, you remain self-represented and are responsible for filing, service, and presentation in court.

Who This Helps

Ghost-writing is ideal for:

  • Tenants facing eviction who can speak for themselves in court but need strong pleadings.
  • Homeowners defending small claims or park disputes under Chapter 723.
  • Consumers or pro se litigants who want to reduce legal costs by organizing their own facts and evidence.

Why It Saves Money

The more you do, the less it costs.

If you provide clear, organized facts and properly scanned documents, your cost drops dramatically.
For example, a pleading that might normally cost around $1,600 can often be prepared for about $200 when all materials are complete and ready to work from.

Important

  • No photographs: All documents must be properly scanned (600 dpi searchable PDF).
  • No work begins until payment and a signed agreement are received.
  • You remain pro se. The attorney drafts and advises — you file and appear.
